Presently, staff within the Newborn
Services Department are intimately involved in the design of the proposed NICU
in the new hospital being built on the Grafton site. The overarching name
of the project is
HSDP
- the Health Services Delivery Plan.
A committee was formed in April
1999. The
committee
includes neonatologists, senior nursing staff, management staff, a parent
representative, and a National Women's Hospital co-ordinator.
It has been an exciting project to
be involved in. The design of a new NICU has been difficult, with planning
of a functional unit within the confines of a predetermined "footprint", as well
as anticipating future technologies and changes in care.
The NICU will reduce in size from
the present 59 cot spaces to 46, plus two isolation spaces. There will be
no reduction in Level 3 spaces, and the reduction in Level 2 spaces is primarily
to allow for the commission of Level 2 spaces in Waitemata Health (Waitakere and
North Shore Hospitals) under the Sub-Regional Equity of Access Agreement (SREA). Please click on the link to

posted as updated plans become available.
