Welcome to the ADHB

Healthy Communities, Quality Healthcare is the vision for Auckland DHB. Our aim is to achieve the right mix of services for the people of Auckland city while balancing the needs of people who live outside our area and require our tertiary services.

We have three organisation-wide goals and our most pressing is to Lift the health of people in Auckland city. To achieve this, we are using a whole-systems approach whereby internal departments and external organisations are working in closer cooperation to achieve a vital few health outcomes and keep our community healthy, since we know a large proportion of our hospitalisations are avoidable.

Our second goal, Lead performance improvement, summarises our commitment to ensuring that all health and support services are integrated and all decision-making is evidence and values-based. This means challenging past practices and making sure current decisions make the best use of resources for our population.

The goal also refers to our organisational health. We face the challenge of recruiting and retaining staff in a competitive international marketplace. We are working to ensure current staff have the support they need, and prospective staff know that Auckland DHB is a great place to work. We are a leading teaching hospital with strong links to the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology and Unitec, enabling us to build strong ties with the future workforce.

Our third goal is to Live within our means. We receive over $1 billion each year in funding. Although we have a large deficit, we now understand the root causes of this much better and have plans in place to help us live within our means. The deficit limits our ability to expand services or invest in new areas. The deficit will not prevent us from achieving improvements in the health status of our local population. It means we have to be innovative and understand what we need to prioritise now in order to get the greatest gains into the future. In short, we have to do more with the resources available to us.

I hope your visit will extend your knowledge of the Auckland District Health Board and will assist you in getting the most benefit from what we can offer.

Garry Smith
